In Chapter 10, the author deals with the theme "The Power of New." One way that this theme is emphasized is with this quote from the beginning of the chapter: "We all have our old ways of doing things, but Jesus wants to do something new in our lives." It is this honest yet encouraging manner in which the author writes that makes this chapter very powerful. On page 95, the author goes in detail about the differences between the old commandments of the Old Testament and Jesus` new commands. Halladay echoes this idea by stating "Jesus` new commandment is the key to renewing love. His commandment gives the path and the power to moving from old to new."
The author continues by stating "rediscover the attitude of love in the everyday habits of your life. You simply take the things that have become mere habit and inject love into them again." It is this insight and clarity of thought that make Jesus` command of loving others very applicable in my own life. Later on in this section, the author brings up the story of Peter walking on the water. The story brings up two important perspectives: "I think I can" versus "I know I can`t but I know God can."
To end the chapter, the author finished with a simple but powerful statement. "There is no fear in love. But perfect loves drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." (1 John 4:8) Love is not an emotion - it is an attitude and an action. Love never fails.
